I have had so many problems in life. The reason is because it took me awhile to learn about prioritizing what is important and setting aside time to live. It is hard when you do not even understand oneself about what is important. Just because you love to do it does not make it important. We all have needs every week like bills, cleaning, and family. If you set time aside for all this then you will find time to live once again.
How Do I Set Priorities Straight And Still Enjoy My Life
I am going to give you five steps you can use to set priorities. I want to share this because it has taken me years to set what is important first.
Stop, Think, and then Act
We all have many ideas at some point in our life. We get an urge to be known, help people, become successful, or more. All these ideas go through your head, the first thing you need to do is “STOP!”.
Stop and write things down. Do it for a week or a month and do it every day. Then at the end of the month go back to the list and start at the beginning. Write your first idea down on another list, then go to the second idea on your list and write it down on the separate list, and continue. As you go down the list and you see the same idea place a checkmark beside the idea on the new list. When you get to the end you should have multiple ideas with checkmarks. Take the top three and place them on a final list in order of most checkmarks at the top and least at the bottom. The one at the top is evidently the most important to your heart. That should be your first goal. Now it is time to think.
Why is this goal so important to you? Is it achievable? Is it reality or a dream? These are a few questions you need to ask yourself. I will give you an example. Say you are just getting out of college and starting your career. The high on your list is to get a car, specifically a sports car. Well this is achievable depending on income and expenses. Are you able to save money for the car for the first year as a down payment? How much can you save a month? If you can only save $200 a month then probably you would not be able to afford the car payments of a new sports car. You can cut cost, extend your goal, or change your goal. Instead of the new sports car get a used sports car. If there is not a vehicle available, then continue to save. Goals are meant to achieve what we need in life, not what we want.
Is What You Do Everyday Important
We do so much everyday, but do we do things important or waste time? Keep track of what you are doing every month. Some of the things I recommend are how many steps you take in a day, task you complete in a day ( are the priorities or time wasteful), what foods you eat in a day, and good deeds you do.
If you have a lot of task completed in a day, but are not priorities, maybe you can do a few good deeds. Some good deeds are helping your neighbor, giving time to the church, and visiting friends and sharing life experience. Also keeping track of calories will help you see why you are gaining weight or not losing weight. It can also help you see why you are tired. Remember an everyday diet is 2000 calories. If you want to keep track of your calories check this website out.
Cut Back On The Need To Do Stuff
I have always had problems prioritizing necessities over personal wants. It took me a few years to realize that some personal wants are really a necessity, for me, and what I thought was a necessity was a want. You need to figure these out for yourself.
One way I did this was I wrote everything down on a list and made two columns: necessity or want. I found out that Facebook and blogging were a definite necessity. Although I did not need Facebook for hours on hours, I just needed it for no longer than one hour. It is my way to relax after work, talk to friends, and get updates on people I don’t always get a chance to chat with. Now blogging is a stress reliever for me. I use to do it for a business, but that added stress. I eliminated the business and now it is relaxing. I like to help people and I hope what I blog will help someone oneday. One of the “need to do” things I use to do at least once a week was going out for Chinese food. I love it, especially General Tso’s, but cutting back saved money and time. I am now able to get more done in a day rather than saving everything for Saturday and getting Chinese. Now I do get it now and then, but I consider that a reward.
Figure Out What You Need And What You Want
You just need to figure out what you need and what you want. This is also a great way to help budget your money. You need money for the mortgage, electricity, taxes, and your car. What you don’t need money for is eating out, going to the movies, buying name brand, or going to the bar. These can be cut out and prioritized as a personal want. When you get your budget bringing money into the bank then you can add some personal expenses like eating out or going to the movies. You can see this as an reward for doing good with your budget.
Now that you have figured out what you need to do and what you want to do, you need to do it. Start a schedule, trust me! I have put things off in the past or forgotten. Now I use Google Calendar and I keep my bills listed on a white board. This shows me the big picture. So if I have a large bill coming at the end of the month and several smaller bills earlier in the month I can break down the large bill and pay it ahead or when it is due. I budget groceries every week and go shopping every other week. You can look at your bank statement to see how much you have previously spent shopping. I also have a goal for extra money. This money I put back in case of emergency or unpredicted expenses like buying a new video game. If you pay you home insurance every three months you can break it down monthly to cost you less per month.
You get all this done, great! You even have extra money now what do you want to do with it. Well you can go out to eat once a week, save money for a trip, or add money to groceries to get steak and lobster and grill it out. It is your money you can do with it as you please. Just be responsible and do not blow it all in one place. Set a goal to keep a percentage of your extra money. This will give you a small base so if something did happen you would not be stuck in a hole.
Hope I Help You
I do hope I help you when I talk about my life experience and what I have learned. There have been hard times in my life and if I had a friend that taught me I think I would have been different. Thanks for reading this and please like and share to help others. May God be with you and give you wisdom.
